Despite COVID-19, We Can All Do Our Best

When contemplating the idea of problem-solving, the great, late jazz composer, Duke Ellington said, “A problem is a chance to do your best.” Here at Avamere Transitional Care and Rehabilitation — Boise, we are treating COVID-19 as a chance for us to do our best.
All have felt the negative effects of this pandemic. Residents and their loved ones feel the frustration of in-person, distanced visits only once a week. Employees experience challenges of COVID-19 in addition to their other personal challenges, and while they put on a smiling face for residents and fellow co-workers, the signs of stress are still visible. Yet with these unique obstacles, we have a chance to do our best.
To lessen the COVID-19 blues and create better employee and residential relations, Resident Care Manager Jamie Estes, Medical Records Director Sarah Charters, and Staffing Coordinator Christy Leavitt thought deeply about ways to boost morale and lift everyone’s spirits. Jamie suggested that every Thursday we pick a clothing theme, create a flyer, and notify others about it. Clothing examples include polka dots, flowers, and sports attire. Every Thursday residents and staff dress up and participate in the event. The idea originated from honest inquiry and creative thinking.
After two months, administrative staff have observed a difference. The bright colors seem to energize everyone. Residents appear more jovial. Staff express excitement at the opportunity to wear an assortment of different clothing. Residents and staff converse in a more friendly manner. This simple idea has proven to unify, excite, and energize both employee and residents alike.
Who knows where this worldwide virus will take us — either way it is a chance for all of us to do our best.
